The first coverage of the 2011 spring season took me to Galesburg High School on a beautiful mid-March afternoon. The temperature at game time was 51 degrees, and the sun was shining. Of course, midway through the game I received a text message from my sister....in sunny Arizona where it was 80 degrees. It was a picture message....from HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona with the Cubs in spring training action. Suddenly, 50 and sunny wasn't feeling as warm as it had!
It was a rough start for Galesburg coach Brad Swanson and the Silver Streaks in their season opener, falling 16-1 to the Orion Chargers. Orion lost a lot to graduation, from a team that advanced to the Sweet 16 in Class 1A a season ago, but still look like a top team in the area.
Here is some video highlights of the game. It shows Galesburg's Chelsey Weigand sliding in just a split second late at 1st base for an out, and Kelsey McKillip trying to score on a wild pitch. Player interviews from senior Sydney Edwards and junior Jordan Marshall.
